The welcoming of 2016 brings us one year closer to 2030, which is the date set to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With such crucial yet challenging goals, such as the first, "End all poverty in all forms," collaboration is key. The Committee on Teaching About the United Nations (CTAUN) realizes that awareness lays the foundation for such collective efforts, which is why the SDGs play such a prominent role in this year's CTAUN Conference.
For those who want to brush up on their SDGs online, the UN's Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform highlights key information. However, on Friday, January 22, during the Introductory Opening Session of the 17th Annual CTAUN Conference at UN Headquarters, knowledgeable UN officials will review the history and significance of the SDGs. CTAUN Committee Chair Anne-Marie Carlson will launch the conference with her opening remarks, followed by presentations by Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Cristina Gallach, Ambassador David Donoghue (Ireland), and Director of the UN Millennium Campaign/ Agenda 2030, Mitchell Toomey. All of these leaders within the UN have different areas of expertise, so it will be interesting to see how each of them interpret and explain the SDGs.
As a rapporteur covering this session, I am curious to learn more about how the SDGs are presented to different audiences, both nationally and internationally. For example, I am interested in learning whether countries are introducing the SDGs into primary school education and academic curriculum.
