Food Security - A Major Challenge
According to reports by various organizations active in the domain of food security and think-tanks analyzing policies aimed at poverty alleviation say that close to a billion people in the world sleep hungry every night. Majority of the developed countries have tackled the issue of food security and people there have access to enough food to lead a healthy life. Food security in these countries is becoming an undeniable security and has formed one of the major objectives of the governments of these countries.
However, things don't look good in developing countries when it comes to food security. Most of them still face the issue of hunger and have not been able to lessen the scale and intensity of it. There are various reasons for this failure. First and foremost, there is a direct relationship between food security and economic growth. The higher the economic growth the stronger food security. One of the tested model to boost economic growth is attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign indirect investment (FII).
It is usually investments that go from developed and industrialized countries to developing and least developed countries. Here, both sides have a role to play. Developing countries ought to create the needed environment for attracting investments and the developed countries ought to show the willingness and generosity to invest. It is the investments that ultimately alleviate poverty and put food on the plates of the needy people.
The second reason has to do with the menace of corruption. Sometime, the country with vulnerable food security has the conducive environment for investments and the resources but the issue of hunger still exists there. People still go hungry every night. Why is that? Because of corruption coupled with mismanagement of the economy. Corruption leads to inequality and food insecurity. It creates elitism and it is this class that benefits the most from the wealth of the country. The wealth goes to few powerful and well-connected elites. They control everything and live luxurious lives at the expense of the majority who don't have access to food to quench their hunger.
Now what is the solution? Firstly, food security is a global problem. It therefore requires a global effort to tackle it. It is not "Us v/s Them" problem. It is all "Us". It is "We", the human beings. Helping each other and supporting each other in boosting our economic development and fighting corruption is the only way forward. So cooperation and collaboration are the key to guarantee food security. In the end of the day, we are all human beings. If we don't help each other then who else would. That is what make us different from other creatures.
